Essentials of Medical Coding

Medical coding is the process of extracting data about a patient's health care, such as information on procedures, diagnoses, required medical equipment, and medical services, from the doctor's notes. The universal medical alphanumeric codes are created using this information by a medical coder.


Three categories of widely used alphanumeric codes in medicine exist:


International Classification of Diseases (ICD): This widely used classification system was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition to other functions, the classification system is frequently used for data collecting and health recording. Symptoms, illnesses, diseases, and causes of mortality can all be categorised using these codes.

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT): In the US, CPT codes describe various types of medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures and services. This method, which has three categories, was created by the American Medical Association (AMA). processes, modern medical techniques, clinical laboratories, and cutting-edge technologies.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) to facilitate in the processing of insurance claims for Medicare or other providers. They are used by coders to record medical processes, goods, services, and merchandise.


ICD-10 Code l35.9-Erythema NOS:- The skin disorder erythema nodosum (EN) is characterised by painful, red pimples that typically appear on the legs and ankles. It is an inflammatory condition brought on by an illness, a drug's side effect, or an autoimmune condition. Fever, tiredness, and joint pain are among symptoms. The main goal of treatment is to control the underlying cause, which may involve using antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and rest.
